About Us

The Welsh Karate Union is an association of karate clubs throughout Wales. We are fully registered members of the Welsh Karate Governing Body (W.K.G.B); the only Sports Council recognised governing body for karate in Wales.

We have been delivering the traditional style of Shotokan karate to all ages and abilities for over 3 decades. Our emphasis is on practical self-defence, though the techniques and exercises incorporated within karate, while still promoting a high level of fitness, self-confidence and discipline.

We maintain and expect a very high standard from all our club instructors and their assistants. All our coaches are qualified and have been awarded either the governing bodies level 1 or 2 coaching awards the only coaching awards currently recognised for karate in Wales, along with a compact injury first aid qualification. All coaches have attended a good Practice and Child Protection Awareness course.

We operate a Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult Policy regarding children in sport, and ensure that all our instructors, assistant instructors and volunteers are CRB checked (Criminal Records Bureau).

The WKU has a continuous coaching and education programme to ensure our instructors remain to be among the highest qualified in Wales.
